A SMALL, OUTDOOR SPECIALIST RETAILER, OWNED BY A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT TESTER
AGE VERIFICATION REQUIRED!
The Morakniv Companion (S) is widely regarded as one of the most popular affordable bushcraft knives in the world — and with good reason. It strikes the perfect balance between performance, durability, ease of use, and price, making it a go-to tool for both newcomers and seasoned outdoorsfolk.
Made in Sweden and built for real-world use, the Companion S features a 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel blade — a trusted steel known for its corrosion resistance, edge retention, and low maintenance, especially in damp and muddy UK conditions.
The Companion is just one part of the Morakniv range, a trusted brand known for its consistent quality and Scandinavian practicality. Whether you’re browsing the full Mora knife collection or looking for a heavy-duty upgrade like the Morakniv Garberg or Bushcraft Black, we’ve got options to suit every level of experience.
The stainless steel used in this model — Sandvik 12C27 — offers a reliable balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. This makes it especially suited for:
Wet and damp conditions
Coastal environments, where salty air and moisture can quickly rust carbon steel
Low-maintenance users, who don’t want to oil or clean their blade after every use
Field use, where the knife might be stored or sheathed while damp without immediate cleaning
Food prep, since stainless doesn’t react with acidic ingredients like citrus or tomatoes
It’s the ideal choice for the UK’s unpredictable weather and for anyone wanting a solid, worry-free blade that stays clean and rust-free with minimal upkeep.
You’ll find plenty of online debate over which Companion is “better” — the stainless or the carbon steel version. The truth is: it depends on your needs and environment.
Feature | Stainless Steel (Companion S) | Carbon Steel (Companion C) |
---|---|---|
Rust Resistance | ✅ Excellent – handles moisture & coastal air | ❌ Needs regular oiling & care |
Edge Retention | ✅ Very good for general use | ✅ Slightly better with frequent maintenance |
Ease of Sharpening | ✅ Easy with field tools | ✅ Even easier, if kept rust-free |
Maintenance Requirements | ✅ Low – rinse and go | ❌ High – must be kept dry and clean |
Food Safety | ✅ Non-reactive with acidic foods | ❌ Can discolour or taste metallic |
Best Use Case | UK weather, camping, beginners, food prep | Dry conditions, seasoned users, carving focus |
In short: unless you specifically want to patina your blade or are comfortable with regular maintenance, the stainless version offers better day-to-day usability, especially in the UK where moisture is always a factor.
The Morakniv Companion is available in a variety of colours to suit different environments and preferences. Choose a muted tone like black or green for a more traditional look, or opt for a high-visibility colour like orange to make sure your knife doesn’t go missing in leaf litter, long grass, or fading light.
Bright colours can make all the difference when you're working around camp and need to set your knife down mid-task. It's not just style — it's smart.
The Companion is designed first and foremost to be a cutting tool — and it excels at it. To prioritise edge durability and user comfort, the spine is unsharpened and not ground to 90 degrees, meaning it won’t reliably strike a ferro rod.
This is a deliberate design choice by Morakniv to focus on blade performance and grip ergonomics, rather than making the spine fire-steel ready. If fire-starting is a core part of your setup, we recommend pairing this with a dedicated ferro rod striker, or stepping up to a model with a 90° spine like the Morakniv Garberg.
The scandi grind is especially well-suited to bushcraft because it gives excellent control for woodworking and fire prep tasks, like carving notches, making feather sticks, and splitting kindling. Its wide bevels make it easy to guide by feel, even for those new to knife work.
Unlike complex grinds that require specialist sharpening gear, a scandi grind is easy to maintain with simple tools — even in the field. A flat stone or basic field sharpener is all you need to bring the edge back quickly, making it a reliable choice for remote trips where maintenance matters.
The rubberised TPE handle adds to that field-ready reliability, offering a secure, fatigue-free grip in all weather conditions, and just as easy to wipe clean or rinse in a stream. Whether you're working in rain, snow, or muck, it stays usable and safe.
To keep your knife performing at its best, we suggest pairing it with a compact field sharpening stone. A simple pull-through or folding diamond sharpener is more than enough to keep that scandi edge razor sharp, even while out on a multi-day trip.
